The 350ha Monte Schiavo estate in Marche is a testament to the Pieralisi family whose background was in olive oil manufacturing equipment, but 20 years ago began to invest in agriculture, also purchasing vineyards from the co-operative within Maiolati Spontini. They own a portfolio of prime vineyard within the Castelli di Jesi zone, and the Monte Schiavo winery is situated amongst some of their most prized plots, notably the Colle del Sole vineyard. The appointment of talented young winemaker Simone Schiaffino, and collaboration with renowned Italian winemaking consultant Carlo Ferrini since the 2015 vintage, has added a new depth and complexity to their portfolio. Monte Schiavo are in the process of converting to organic production.
Monte Schiavo Sassaiolo Rosso Piceno wine is an approachable, flavour-packed red with warm earth and herbs and a meatiness right in the middle! A ripe open nose with cherry jam, red berry fruit characters and herbal notes. The palate is warm and generous, packed full of rich berry fruit, a touch of spice and a bitter plum twist on the finish. Tannins are gentle and add structure to this substantial, spicy red. Perfect with rich pasta dishes with a meaty sauce or pizzas.
